why is a complex food web better than a simple food chain for the survival of a community?

with a web there are more food sources and fewer people dipping in to one. with a chain however more food becomes less available. its like letting food coloring disperse in water. if u go from one point that point becomes darkest but if u move the coloring around as u disperse it the water becomes aqually colorful
