Survival Backpack Part 1

In this series I will show discuss and display the items that I keep in my Survival Backpack. You may call it a BOB (bug out bag), GHB (get home bag), 72 hour kit, or any other name. Basically this is a ready to go system that is made up of smaller kits that can help me to survive away from home, and ideally in the wilderness. There are many other videos on YouTube on this same subject. If this interests you spend some time watching many of them to get an overall view of the kits. Each person will pack it a little differently, so the more you see the better you can prepare your kit. As always, thanks for watching!

Here’s my summer bug out bag contents. I neglected to mention that I have a space blanket, poncho and fishing gear kit in the bag as well.

As the seasons change, so do the contents of my BOB. For colder weather I added a sleeping bag, wool socks, balaclava, wool scarf, and more.

Bug Out Survival Essentials 1/4

A look at the must have items needed for crisis survival. Part 1 of 4. Packed with info, this series covers food, water, shelter, guns and defense, and much more. With the status of our ecomomy this is very important. Being prepared is a must. Anything can happen, any day, anytime. Remember 9/11? Hurricane Katrina? Whats next? My goal was to try to include the most basic and improtant items in a bug our bag. Yes there are some things shown that are non essential. I tried to add as much info and gear as I could without making it a 10 part series. Please reference my other videos for individual items missing from this video. I have videos on each of my kits, including… First Aid, Basic Survival, Fire lighting and more. Thank you.

SOG SEAL Pup vs. Camillus Pilot Survival Knife / Ontario 499 ASEK review & demonstration

Which knife is better, the SOG SEAL Pup or the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife?

They’re similar in size but differ greatly in weight and blade material. The Camillus is much heavier due to the awesome butt cap on the handle, and the SOG’s serrations are far superior to the saw teeth on the ASEK.

The Camillus blade is 4-7/8″ long and is made of 1095 tool steel, which is easy to sharpen. The saw teeth on the spine work well on wire and nails, but fall short on cutting metal and plastic sheeting. The size of the blade and the protective metal casing on the sheath make this a safe choice for all skill levels.

The Camillus Pilot Survival Knife is on the “must have” list of many survivalists for three simple reasons: It’s a comfortable, safe, and reliable survival tool.

The SOG SEAL Pop is light, balanced, and tough. The blade is made of AUS 6 S/S, which makes it hard to get a good edge in the field. That said, it maintains an edge better than a softer blade.

I’d recommend the SOG SEAL Pup knife to anyone looking for a decent camping/utility knife. A straight edge would be better for bushcraft, but for urban survival applications, the serrations will gnaw right through metals, plastics, nylons, and other synthetics with ease. The protective sheath and managable size make this a safe knife for all skill levels.

Which knife proves best? Watch the video and find out. Be sure to leave comments and a rating.

I just sold my Camillus 499 to survival instructor Paul Tarsitano of http://www.savealifeca.com. I’ll miss it, but I know Paul will put it to good use.

Survival Kit

http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/tv/handyhints.asp
Go to our website for more Handy Hints info.

It’s great to go outdoors and get away from it all. I do it every chance I get, both in Missouri and on vacation outside the state. No one ever expects trouble on an outdoor outing…and hopefully it won=t ever happen. But even on a day trip, a sudden storm or unexpected injury in your group can leave you a long way from help. A survival kit can mean the difference between trouble you can manage, and disaster. Here’s what you’ll need: A first aid kit…a pocketknife or quality hunting knife with a sharpening stone…a compass and map of the area you’re traveling… varnish-coated strike-anywhere stick matches in a screw top plastic waterproof container…a candle that’s at least 6″ tall and 3/4 of an inch wide…fire start tablets…a collapsible soft plastic water bottle…20-feet of nylon cord…a small bottle of water purification tablets…an air-force-type signal mirror…a plastic police-type whistle…one millimeter thick clear plastic sheeting…a space blanket…a penlight flashlight with spare batteries…and finally, something for energy: like jerky, hard candy or granola bars. The entire pack only adds about two pounds to your pack or canoe, without lightening your wallet much. A Survival kit is like car insurance. Hopefully you’ll never need to use it, but in an emergency, you’ll be glad it’s there.

72 Hour Load Bearing Equipment 2/3

In this series I will show you a modified version of the US issue LC-2 LBE (load bearing equipment). This system is specifically setup as a 72 hour survival kit to be used as is without the addition of a backpack. This system is designed to be Survival / evasion type gear, NOT a traditional tactical type system. This kit is more of a bare bones kit mainly consisting of essentials to support one person for 1 to 3 days on the move. It is designed to be a lightweight, mobile, and adaptable solution to carrying essential gear in the field. This system is also a perfect setup for day hiking. Video 2 of 3.
